Addiction in Casino Games

People visit casinos primarily for the enjoyment of playing casino games, and the possibility of winning money adds to the pleasure of the games. An adrenaline rush accompanies the thrill of risking money, and to some, this feeling proves to be so seductive that they give in to the lure of gambling and they become addicted.

When a harmless pleasure turns into a compulsive need, it becomes an addiction, and addiction can be destructive. In the same way, people become addicted to drugs and alcohol. If the thrill that comes from gambling becomes the paramount feeling, then the player has crossed the thin line and become an addict. Like other forms of addiction, gambling can prove to be devastating not only for the person concerned but also his family.

Associations such as Gamblers Anonymous help such people come to grips with their gambling addiction. Gamblers Anonymous was formed by people to share their experiences, their hopes and strengths with one another, to help solve their common problems and to recover from their addiction to gambling.
The most common trait among addicts is their unwillingness to admit that they have a problem. They don’t like to think they are really different from other people. They make repeated attempts to prove to themselves and to others that they can gamble like other normal people. This illusion can be strong and persist till the addict is driven into worse states of mind and his life goes steadily downhill.

To help people identify and admit that they do have a gambling problem, Gamblers Anonymous has a list of questions which they request the people concerned to answer. These questions ask the person if online gambling has affected their home life and happiness; whether they have lost time at work due to gambling; if they ever gambled to get money to solve financial problems; whether they ever gambled to escape from trouble or worries; if they have ever considered committing illegal acts to get money for their gambling and whether they have ever considered suicide as a result of their gambling.

There are many other questions to assess the extent to which gambling has affected a person’s personal life, and compulsive gamblers answer at least seven of such questions in the affirmative.

The key purpose of Gamblers Anonymous is to help compulsive gamblers stop gambling, and for this, the first step to recovery is to admit that he/she is a compulsive gambler. The delusion that they don’t really have a problem has to be smashed. Then the long road to recovery can take place with help and support from fellow sufferers.
